I had a friend that used to teach at an alternative high school. This high school was mostly filled with troubled teens. It was often difficult for him to teach these students. I think it’s tough to help these teens if they stay in their current environment. Their peers and sadly sometimes their parents keep them from becoming respectable adults and citizens. I think many times unless a miracle happens, the best way to do troubled teen help is to get the teens in a drastically new environment.
Camps or bootcamps in out-of-town locations can be the stimulus to help these teens realize that there is world and a people that are succeeding in life. I wasn’t the worst kid growing up but I had many destructive behaviors. However, I went to a boarding high school where I stayed in dormitories for my junior and senior year of high school. During that time, I grew up and became responsible. The environment and the people I met helped me realize that I need to take life more seriously and grow up.
