Other than praying about it (which is the best advice), the advice I would give in choosing a career is to research careers you’re might be interested in. Meet people in those careers. Ask them about their job and what their daily responsibilities are. Ask them what they like and don’t like about their job. If I was honest with myself, I would’ve realized that I was nothing like my accounting supervisors who were into their jobs.
Also, try a bunch of different things. Especially new things. I’m starting to think my biggest talent or strength has to do with marketing and promoting a product or idea. But I would’ve never realized this if I hadn’t tried something new: writing a blog. I did not like writing papers in college, but I liked the idea of having a journal my friends could read. Well, I found that I liked writing about stuff I cared about.
Then, my brother told me about someone (problogger.net) who made money writing blogs. So I started researching about business blogging. I found that good, hard-working writers could make money by writing on the Internet. And they could write about stuff they cared about. So I could write about products like laptops or cellphones. Or about sports. Or about trying to learn Spanish. Or anything as long as there are enough people that want to read about it. And with the global Internet, my audience is pretty big. I don’t know how much I’ll make, but I gotta try. If I don’t try, I’ll never know if I could’ve made it as an entrepreneur.
So, try new things. I wish that I would’ve tried to learn new skills and talents (like computer programming, video editing, or teaching little kids) instead of spending much of my time watching TV, playing pool, or playing video games.
Finally, think about the things that make you feel fulfilled. Sometimes we wonder, “What do I like to do?” But that may be the wrong question to ask. I mean, I like to play sports. I like to hang out with friends. I like to play boardgames. Will these activities make me money? Probably not. I think the better question is, “What do I like to do that brings value to this world and to other people?” I believe God made us with different skills and talents. We should use our talents to create value for other people. I heard a saying that goes something like this: “Find a career you would do for free. Then, learn to do that career so well that other people would pay you to do it.”

Another Suggestion:
If you’re really cool with somebody who works in a field that you’re considering, ask if you could shadow him/her or work for that person for free to get a hands-on feel. If you don’t know somebody in that particular field and if you really have that guts (which I sorta don’t in this kind of scenario!), go cold turkey and ask a stranger!

great idea, ballanie. thanks for sharing it!
actually, i think even asking a stranger in the career field you’re interested in would work well especially if you find someone who loves their job.

Hey Jess,
Thanks for commenting. I wish I had thought about careers a lot more when I was in high school. It’s great that you’re thinking about your career now. God bless you on your career and school search.
