I wrote this blog post about emphasizing Ellen White’s statements about the cross of Christ over her statements on Christian lifestyle.
Here’s an excerpt:
I think many Adventists overemphasize Ellen White’s statements on Christian lifestyle and behavior.
I can recall many Adventists telling me what Ellen White said about movies, health, vegetarianism, veganism, card games, the Sabbath, end-of-time persecution, the time of trouble, prayer, Bible reading, and sports.
However, I can recall very few Adventists telling me Ellen White’s views on the cross and Jesus’ sacrifice.
Yet, as I read Triumph of the Trinity, I found that Ellen White is very clear about the gospel and Christ’s atonement for our sins.

Absolutely right! All I ever heard were all the lifestyle quotes growing up in the church & it’s educational system. If SDA’s would really read their prophet for themselves instead of passing down the behavioral rhetoric, things would change and Christ would be put back on the forefront of our message.
Also, much of what she writes is taken out of context MAJORLY. For example, there are still those “health groups” that teach that women should wear pants under skirts. We have a lady who comes to the YMCA who does this. What they don’t take into consideration is that EGW advised this before central heat/air, insulation and heated automobiles were invented. These dear people go around dressing this way because they feel it is a sin before God for a woman to wear pants- or a skirt WITHOUT leggings underneath.
Others have a real burden for not eating fruits & vegetables at the same meal. EGW tried to explain that this advice was for a specific person with a specific stomach condition, but some have made a gospel out of it. It really can get ridiculous and people will dismiss EGW altogether because of these well-meaning, but misguided fanatics.
EGW was a special lady who loved God and when she died that is what her non-SDA neighbors remembered her for- that she spoke so lovingly of Jesus. Her last words were “I know in Whom I have believed” not “Thank God I didn’t wear a wedding ring” or “Thank God I kept Sabbath so strictly, never played cards or ate cheese”.
We get SOOOOO far off track- God help us!!
